12. The Suffering Servant

Psalms 69:5

They who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; mighty are those who would destroy me, who hate me wrongfully; what I did not steal, must I now restore?

Jesus quotes this passage in reference to himself:

John 15:24--25

...but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. It is to fulfill the word that is written in their law: "They hated me without a cause."

Psalms 69:8

Because it is for Your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face.

Psalms 69:10

For zeal for Your House has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.

Jesus is said to be the subject of these verses, too:

Romans 15:3

For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written: "The reproaches of those who reproach You fell on me."

Likewise:

Psalms 69:22

They gave me poison in my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Luke 23:36--37

The soldiers also mocked [Jesus], coming up and offering him vinegar, and saying: "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

If Jesus really fulfilled the second half of this verse, why not the first part?  Also the rest of this Psalm must also be attributed to him. For example:

Psalms 69:6

O G-d, You know my folly; my sins are not hidden from You.

Yet this verse was omitted from the New Testament because it contradicts the Christian doctrine of Jesus' sinlessness:

I Peter 2:22

He committed no sin; no guile was found in his mouth.

Furthermore:

Psalms 69:12

When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.

Jesus is not said to have worn sackcloth. But David (the author of this Psalm) and the Jewish people did:

I Chronicles 21:16

And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the L-rd standing between earth and heaven, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem; then David and the elders, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

In verses 23--29, the Psalmist urges G-d to wreak vengeance on his enemies, whereas Jesus implores:

Luke 23:34

...Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Psalms 69:9

I have become a stranger to my brethren, an alien to my mother's children.

This "prophecy" was supposedly fulfilled by Jesus:

John 7:5

For even [Jesus'] brothers did not believe in him.

John 1:11

Jesus came to his own home, and his own people received him not.

These verses of the New Testament are very revealing. Jesus' immediate family-including his mother, who allegedly gave birth to him miraculously-knew him to be a mortal being. So did his neighbors, who observed him each day. In fact, the New Testament records hostility between Jesus and his neighbors. As we saw on pages 84--85, they even attempted to kill him. Lest readers draw the obvious conclusion, the authors of the New Testament implied that this disbelief was to be expected:

Mark 6:4, 6

And Jesus said to them: "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house....And he wondered because of their unbelief."

However, the truth is that Jesus was thought to be insane by those who knew him best:

Mark 3:21

And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they said: "He is beside himself."


Missionaries claim that the following two passages foretell Jesus' betrayal by Judas (Matthew 26:47--49), which occurred even though "No wisdom, understanding, or counsel can avail against the L-rd" (Proverbs 21:30):

1.

Nahum 1:11

Out of you came one who plotted evil against the L-rd, and counselled wickedness.

This verse refers to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, as the beginning of the chapter indicates:

Nahum 1:1

An oracle concerning Nineveh: the book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

Out of Nineveh came its king, Sennacherib, who plotted to destroy G-d's holy city and Sanctuary by attacking the kingdom of Judah during the reign of Hezekiah. Concerning this invasion, the prophet continues:

Nahum 1:12

Thus says the L-rd, "Though they be united and many, they will be cut off and pass away; though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more."

Although the Assyrian army was large and powerful, G-d promised to destroy both it and its king, saving Israel from further affliction. This is exactly what occurred:

Isaiah 37:36--38

And the angel of the L-rd went forth and slew 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, [Assyria was] all dead corpses. Then Sennacherib, king of Assyria, departed and returned and dwelt at Nineveh. And as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, killed him by the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat; and Esarhaddon reigned in his stead.

2.

Psalms 41:10

Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

Prior to this verse, the Psalmist begs:

Psalms 41:5

...O L-rd, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against You.

As stated, the New Testament claims that Jesus was sinless. Nonetheless, it attributes this verse to him:

John 13:18

I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled: "He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me."

 


Psalms 22:2

My G-d, my G-d, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from helping me, from the words of my cry?

This Psalm voices the concerns of the Jewish people. Thus it continues:

Psalms 22:5--6

In You our fathers trusted; they trusted, and You did deliver them. To You they cried and were saved; in You they trusted, and they were not disappointed.

This passage is alluding to:

Exodus 2:23

In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died and the children of Israel groaned under their bondage and cried out, and their cry out of bondage rose up to G-d.

Unlike the verses under discussion, the following verse is not attributed to Jesus, lest it seem too unflattering:

Psalms 22:7

But I am a worm, not a man; scorned by men and despised by the people.

Again, the "speaker" is the Jewish people. Compare:

Isaiah 41:14

"Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel; I will help you," says the L-rd; "your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel."

Isaiah 49:7

Thus says the L-rd, the Redeemer of Israel, His holy one, to that [Jewish nation] which is despised by men, to that which is abhorred by the nations, to the servant of rulers: "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the L-rd, Who is faithful, [because of] the Holy One of Israel, Who has chosen you."

The Psalm under discussion continues:

Psalms 22:8

All who see me mock me: they make mouths at me, they shake their heads.

 

This is said to have been fulfilled in:

Matthew 27:39

"...And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads."

However, King David was not alluding to Jesus, but to Israel.

Compare:

Psalms 44:14--15

You make us a taunt to our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those about us. You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

Psalms 22:11

I was cast upon You from the womb; and from my mother's belly You have been my G-d.

Compare:

Isaiah 46:3

Hearken to Me, O House of Jacob, all the remnant of the House of Israel, who have been borne by Me from birth, carried from the womb.

Psalms 22:17

For dogs have encompassed me; a company of evildoers encircles me; like a lion, they are at my hands and feet.

The phrase "like a lion" is a direct translation of the Hebrew word "ke'ari." Compare:

Psalms 7:3

Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

To transform Psalms 22:17 into a "prophecy" of Jesus' crucifixion, missionaries translate "ke'ari" as "they have pierced my hands and feet." Yet this is clearly a mistranslation, for the Psalmist continues:

Psalms 22:22

Save me from the lion's mouth, for You have answered me from the horns of wild oxen.

The New Testament (Matthew 27:46) quotes the first verse of this Psalm , 22:2, as the last words of Jesus on the cross before his death.  But this is absurd!  Jesus' sole purpose for coming into the world is said to have been to suffer and die for the sins of others, so that they would be spared a similiar fate, and now when this moment finally arrived, he accuses G-d of abandoning him?!  The reader will find evidence on page 173 that Jesus greatly feared death by crucifixion.

 


Isaiah 52:1

Awake, awake, bear your strength, O Zion; don your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for no more shall the uncircumcised and the unclean come into you.

Isaiah 52:6

Therefore, My people shall know My Name; therefore, in that day, they shall know that it is I Who speaks; here am I.

Isaiah 52:9--10

Break forth into joy, sing together, you waste places of Jerusalem; for the L-rd has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem. The L-rd has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our G-d.

Isaiah 52:12

For you shall not go out in haste and you shall not go in flight, for the L-rd will go before you and the G-d of Israel will be your rear guard.

Isaiah is indisputably speaking about the Jews' return to Jerusalem at the beginning of the Messianic Era. Beginning with the next verse (52:13), however, missionaries claim that the subject under discussion suddenly changes from the nation of Israel to Jesus! Yet the prophet's main themes clearly remain:

1) Israel's role as a suffering people.

2) Israel's gradual and astonishing rise to glory and splendor.

3) The nations' acknowledgment of their sins against Israel.

Isaiah 52:13

Behold, My servant shall prosper: he shall be exalted, extolled, and raised very high.

Nowhere in the Hebrew Bible is the Messiah directly called G-d's servant (see note 148). But Israel (the Jewish people) is, especially in the Book of Isaiah:

Isaiah 41:8

But you, Israel, are My servant; Jacob, whom I have chosen; seed of Abraham, My friend.

Isaiah 43:10

"You are My witnesses," says the L-rd, "and My servant whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He; before Me no G-d was formed, nor shall there be any after Me."

Isaiah 44:1

But now hear, O Jacob, My servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen.

Isaiah 44:21

Remember these things, O Jacob and Israel, for you are My servant: I formed you, you are My servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me.

Isaiah 45:4

For the sake of My servant, Jacob, and My chosen, Israel, I call you by your name; I surnamed you, though you did not know Me.

Isaiah 48:20

Go forth from Babylon, flee from Chaldea, declare [this] with a shout of joy, proclaim it, send it forth to the end of the earth; say: "The L-rd has redeemed His servant, Jacob!"

Isaiah 49:3

And He said to me: "You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified!"

Moreover, the following verse creates an obvious dilemma for those who identify this servant as Jesus:

Isaiah 42:19

Who is blind but My servant, or deaf as My messenger, whom I send? Who is blind as My dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the L-rd?

Rather, during the Messianic Era it is the Jews who will prosper and be greatly "exalted, extolled, and raised very high":

Isaiah 61:5--6

Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers. But you shall be called "priests of the L-rd," men shall say of you, "ministers of our G-d"; you shall eat the wealth of the nations and glory in their riches.

Isaiah 52:14

Just as many were astonished at you, [saying] "His appearance is too marred to be that of a man, and his form to be that of the sons of men."

Much earlier, Isaiah presents a more detailed, metaphorical description of the toll Israel's suffering has taken:

Isaiah 1:5--6

Where could you still be smitten, that you continue to rebel? Every head is sick and every heart faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and bleeding wounds; they are neither pressed out nor bound up nor softened with oil.

It is not uncommon for Israel to be personified:

Hosea 11:1

When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son....

Israel has endured a long, oppressive exile. But at the beginning of the Messianic Era, G-d will make the truth known, and then:

Isaiah 52:15

So shall he startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has not been told them, they shall see, and that which they have not heard, they shall understand.

The world will be stunned by the inner dimensions of the Jews and their relationship to G-d. Likewise:

Isaiah 49:23

Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers; with their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you and lick the dust of your feet-then you will know that I am the L-rd; those who wait for Me shall not be put to shame.

Isaiah 60:10

Foreigners shall build up your walls and their kings shall minister to you; for in My wrath I smote you, but in My favor I have had mercy on you.

Isaiah 53:1

Who would have believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the L-rd been revealed?

The nations will not see G-d's mighty arm of salvation until the beginning of the Messianic Era, as stated:

Isaiah 52:10

The L-rd has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our G-d.

Isaiah 53:2

He grew up before Him like a tender plant, like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or comeliness that we should look upon him, and no beauty that we should delight in him.

This is a description of the Jewish people growing from infancy to nationhood in the desert, after the exodus from Egypt:

Deuteronomy 8:15

[G-d] led you through the great and dreadful wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground, for there was no water....

Compare:

Isaiah 5:7

For the vineyard of the L-rd of hosts is the House of Israel, and the men of Judah His pleasant plant....

Psalms 80:9--11

You have brought a vine [Israel] out of Egypt, You have cast out nations and planted it. You cleared space for it and caused it to take root, and it filled the land. The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the mighty cedars with its boughs.

Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and forsaken by men; a man of pains, and accustomed to disease; and like one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised and we esteemed him not.

In Biblical Hebrew, although the word "ish," literally means "man," it frequently refers to many, as it does here (although we have rendered it "man" because the entire chapter speaks of the Jewish people in the singular). Similarly:

Judges 20:17

And the man of Israel, besides Benjamin, numbered 400,000 man who drew sword; all these were man of war.

Judges 20:22

And the people, the man of Israel, rallied, and geared up for battle again in the place where they had arrayed themselves the first day.

I Samuel 17:2

And Saul and the man of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped by the valley of Elah and prepared for battle against the Philistines.

The Hebrew word "adam" (man) can refer to many as well:

Ezekiel 34:31

And you, My flock, the sheep of My pasture, are man, and I am your G-d, says the L-rd, G-d.

Thus, the "man of pains" here is Israel, which has indeed been despised and forsaken by the nations of the world.

Isaiah 53:4--6

Surely he has borne our diseases and endured our pains; yet we thought him stricken, smitten by G-d, and afflicted. But he was wounded because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; the chastisement of our welfare was upon him, and by his injury we were healed. Like sheep we all went astray. Everyone turned to his own way; and the L-rd has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Israel is described in these terms elsewhere:

Isaiah 30:26

...in the day the L-rd binds up the bruise of His people and heals the stroke of their wound.

Jeremiah 30:12

For thus says the L-rd: "Your [Israel's] hurt is incurable, and your wound is grievous."

Until the Messiah arrives, Israel's suffering will atone for the sins of the nations. Therefore, the world's welfare is secure. At the start of the Messianic Era, however, the nations will realize that they themselves deserved the pains and calamities they inflicted on the Jews, the bearers of Divine Truth. Consequently:

Isaiah 53:8

By oppression and judgment he was taken away, and with his generation, who considered? For he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due.

Each nation will blame itself for Israel's being "cut off out of the land of the living," i.e., exiled from the Holy Land, and each will be grieved in knowing that it was deserving of such affliction "...for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due."

Isaiah 53:9

And they made his grave with the wicked and his deaths among the rich, although he had done no violence and there was no deceit in his mouth.

"They" refers to Gentiles, who robbed rich Jews by falsely accusing them of wrongdoing, then killing them and burying them with common criminals.

"His deaths" means the deaths of the individual Jews who make up Israel.

Isaiah 53:10

Yet it pleased the L-rd to crush him by disease, to see if his soul would offer itself in restitution, in order that he might see his seed [and] prolong his days, and that the will of the L-rd might prosper by his hand.

One major purpose of Israel's suffering is to make restitution to G-d for its sins, thereby rendering them completely forgiven:

Isaiah 43:25

I, I am He Who blots out your transgressions for My sake, and I will not remember your sins.

Ezekiel 36:25

And I will sprinkle pure water upon you, and you shall be purified; of all your defilements and idols, I will cleanse you.

After this restitution is made and Israel is completely purified, the nation will "see its seed," i.e., it will be blessed with an abundance of children, as promised:

Deuteronomy 30:5

And the L-rd, your G-d, will bring you into the land your fathers possessed, in order that you may possess it; and He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers.

Ezekiel 36:37

Thus says the L-rd, G-d: "Moreover, this request I will grant the House of Israel, fulfilling it for them: I will increase their men like flock."

G-d will also "prolong his days," granting the Jewish people extreme longevity:

Isaiah 65:22

They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for the days of My people shall be like the days of a tree, and My chosen ones shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

Zechariah 8:4

Thus says the L-rd of hosts: "Old men and old women shall again dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand due to old age."

Isaiah 53:11

He shall see the travail of his soul and be satisfied; by his knowledge did My servant justify the Righteous One to the many, and bear their iniquities.

The Jews have certainly borne the iniquities of the Gentiles: throughout history, they have been discriminated against, oppressed, tortured, raped, robbed, and murdered. By submitting themselves to this treatment and acknowledging it to be His will, they have justified and sanctified G-d's Name. In the Messianic Era, as stated, the nations will realize this self--sacrifice and the Jewish people will be satisfied and rewarded:

Isaiah 62:8

The L-rd has sworn by His right hand and by the arm of His strength: "I will never again make your grain food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink your wine, over which you have labored."

Micah 4:4

They shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the L-rd of hosts has spoken.

Zephaniah 3:20

"At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you together, for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your captivity before your eyes," says the L-rd.

Isaiah 53:12

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; for he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with transgressors, yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the transgressors.

Throughout the ages, the Jew has "bor[ne] the sin of many": unjustly accused and denied a fair trial, he has all too often been "numbered with the transgressors" and made to "pour out his soul to death." Yet, amid all this persecution, the Jews have relentlessly "interceded for the [Gentile] transgressors," in compliance with:

Jeremiah 29:7

And seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you, and pray to the L-rd on its behalf, for in its welfare you will have peace.

In the Hebrew Bible, spoil refers exclusively to property and valuables taken in war:

Numbers 31:11

And they took all the spoil and all the prey, both of men and of beast.

Deuteronomy 3:7

But all the cattle and the spoil of the cities, we took for prey for ourselves.

I Samuel 30:18--19

And David recovered all that Amalek had carried away....And there was nothing lacking for them...neither spoil nor anything they had taken for themselves-David recovered everything.

Never having participated in a war, Jesus could not have taken spoils. But Israel has, and will again:

Ezekiel 39:10

"...[Israel] will despoil those who despoiled them, and plunder those who plundered them," says the L-rd, G-d.

Zechariah 14:14

...and the wealth of all the nations round about shall be collected: gold, silver, and garments in great abundance.

The New Testament supplies further evidence that Jesus is not the subject of the chapter under discussion:

Isaiah 53:3

He was despised and forsaken by men; a man of pains, and accustomed to disease, and like one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised and we esteemed him not.

In contrast, Jesus was supposedly very popular:

Luke 4:15

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep that is dumb before its shearers, he opened not his mouth.

Jesus did "open his mouth" on the cross:

Matthew 27:46

About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice: "E--li, E--li, lama sabachthani?" that is: "My G-d, my G-d, why have You forsaken me?"

Although the New Testament translates "sabachthani" as "forsaken me" (echoing Psalms 22:2), it means "slaughtering me." Compare:

Deuteronomy 12:21

...then you shall slaughter [sabachta] of your herd and of your flock....

In other words, Jesus screamed out, "My G-d, my G-d, why are You slaughtering me?" A self--styled messiah, Jesus was shocked that G-d was actually letting him die!

Isaiah 53:9

And they made his grave with the wicked and his deaths among the rich, although he had done no violence and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Jesus made his grave with the rich, not the wicked:

Matthew 27:57, 59--60

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph....And Joseph took [Jesus'] body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb....

Conversely, Jesus died among the wicked, not the rich:

Matthew 27:38

Then the two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right hand, and one on the left.

The phrase "in his deaths" is also inappropriate for Jesus, for he died only one death.

Even more problematic, Jesus is known to have committed violent acts:

1.

Matthew 21:18--19

In the morning, as [Jesus] was returning to the city, he was hungry. And seeing a fig tree by the wayside he went to it, and found nothing on it but leaves only. And he said to it: "May no fruit ever come from you again!" And the fig tree dried up at once.

If this really happened, what wrong did the tree do, especially since we learn:

Mark 11:13

...it was not the season for figs.

2.

Jesus is said to have permitted "demons" to possess two thousand herd of swine, which promptly stampeded off a cliff and drowned in the sea (Mark 5:11--13). Surely he could have exorcised these "demons":

Matthew 12:27

And if I [Jesus] cast out demons by Be--el'zebul (Prince of demons), by whom do your [Pharisees'] sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges.

G-d also enabled [Solomon] to learn that skill which expels demons, which is a science useful and sanative to men. He composed such incantations also by which distempers are alleviated. And he left behind him the manner of using exorcisms, by which they drive away demons, so that they never return, and this method of cure is of great force to this day: for I have seen a certain man of my own country[,] whose name was Eleazar, releasing people that were demonical in the presence of Vespasian [king of Rome], and his sons, and his captains, and the whole multitude of his soldiers.Josephus Antiquities book 8, chapter 2, section 5

Dr. Conyers Middleton, Eighteenth Century:

It is remarkable that all the Christian Fathers, who lay so great a stress on the particular gift of casting out devils, allow the same power both to the Jews and [to] the Gentiles, as well before as after our Saviour's coming.

Origen, Third--Century Egyptian Philosopher:

The magicians in Egypt cast out evil spirits, cure diseases by a breath, call up the spirits of the dead, make inanimate things move as if they were alive, and so influence some uncultured men, that they produce in them whatever sights and sounds they please. But because they do such things shall we consider them the sons of G-d? Or shall we call such things the tricks of pitiable and wicked men?

John 2:13--15

The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple, he found those who were selling oxen, and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting, and when he had made a whip of cords, he drove them all, with their sheep and oxen, out of the Temple; and he poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

The Torah commands that one bring one--tenth of his yearly produce to the Temple:

Deuteronomy 14:22--23

You shall surely tithe all the increase of your seed, which comes forth from the field year by year. And you shall eat before the L-rd, your G-d, in the place He shall choose to cause His Name to dwell, the tithe of your corn, wine, and oil, and the first of your herd and flock, in order that you may learn to fear the L-rd, your G-d, always.

If one lives far away, however, then he is to sell this tenth and bring the proceeds to the Temple:

Deuteronomy 14:24--26

And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it....Then you shall turn it into money, bind up the money in your hand, and go to the place the L-rd, your G-d, chooses. And spend the money on whatever you desire: oxen, sheep, wine, strong drink-whatever your soul craves; and you shall eat there before the L-rd, your G-d, and rejoice, you and your household.

The people coming from distant lands needed to exchange their currency for Judean money in order to buy sacrificial animals, food and drink, etc., in fulfillment of the above commandments. Consequently, there were animal merchants and money changers on the premises. They were not operating illegally, nor were they  situated in an unassigned area where such practice would be considered sacrilege. If such were the case, it is ludicrous to think that the Temple officials and the millions of worshippers would have been oblivious to it121.

How then can one justify Jesus' behavior? And even if, for whatever reason, he could not tolerate what he saw, surely he could have expressed his feelings in a more courteous and dignified manner, especially on the Temple grounds, during the Passover preparations, and in the presence of multitudes of pilgrims!

Moreover, unlike the subject of the passage under discussion, there was deceit in Jesus' mouth:

Mark 16:17

Jesus said: "These signs will accompany those who believe in my name: they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."/p>

John 14:12--14

Truly, truly, I [Jesus] say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to my Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it.

Christians know that these are false promises.

John 7:8--10

"Go to the feast yourselves; I [Jesus] am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come." So saying, he remained in Galilee. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.

Isaiah 53:10

Yet it pleased the L-rd to crush him by disease, to see if his soul would offer itself in restitution, in order that he might see his seed [and] prolong his days, and that the will of the L-rd might prosper by his hand.

Jesus' days were not prolonged, nor did he "see his seed": he died childless approximately at the age of 31.

Isaiah 53:11

He shall see the travail of his soul and be satisfied; by his knowledge did My servant justify the Righteous One to the many, and bear their iniquities.

As shown above, Jesus did not justify G-d either on the cross or in the Temple. And as shown in chapter 2, the founders of Christianity cast Jesus as a "bearer of iniquity" only to capitalize on the then--popular Krishna--Buddha legends.


Jeremiah 31:14--16

Thus says the L-rd: "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentations and bitter weeping: Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted over her children, because they are no more." Thus says the L-rd: "Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded," says the L-rd, "and they shall come back from the land of the enemy. There is hope for your future," says the L-rd, "and your children shall return to their border."

This passage is referring to the ten lost tribes of Israel, who never returned to the Holy Land after being exiled to Assyria., but are destined to do so in the Messianic Era. Hence, the prophet continues:

Jeremiah 31:21--22

Set up waymarks for yourself, make yourself signposts, [and] set your heart towards the highway, the road upon which you went; return, O virgin of Israel, return to these, your cities. How long will you hide, O backsliding daughter?

This redemption is also spoken of elsewhere:

Hosea 2:2

And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together and they shall appoint for themselves one head; and shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

So is the anguish of these lost tribes:

Jeremiah 31:18

I have heard Ephraim bemoaning, "You have chastised me and I was chastised, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for You are the L-rd, my G-d."

The ten tribes of Israel are called "Ephraim" because their first king came from this tribe:

I Kings 11:26, 31, 37

And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephramite... thus says the L-rd, G-d of Israel, "Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you the ten tribes.... And you will be king over Israel."

Jeremiah 7:15

And I will cast you [the tribes of Judah] out of My sight as I have cast out all your brethren, all the offspring of Ephraim.

The New Testament (Matthew 2:16) claims that Herod, the governor of Judah sought the life of baby Jesus whom he considered a threat to his throne (see page 26, no. 4,5).  Therefore, to ensure that Jesus would be among them, Herod, supposedly killed "all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under."  Thus, "fulfilling"  our verse under discussion.  It would have been more appropriate, however, for Leah, Jacob's other wife, to be crying over the fate of these children, for she-not Rachel-is the matriarch of the descendants of Judah:

Genesis 35:23

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: the sons of Leah-Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

Genesis 22:8

And Abraham said: "G-d will provide Himself [with] the lamb for an offering, my son," and the two of them went together.

This was Abraham's answer to his son's question:

Genesis 22:7

"Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for an offering?"

Abraham's most difficult test of loyalty to G-d was the binding of his son, Isaac. The above dialogue was part of that ordeal. Before Abraham actually slayed his son, G-d stopped him by revealing the offering He really desired:

Genesis 22:13

And Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; so Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as an offering instead of his son.

According to missionaries, the verse under discussion is prophesying that Jesus "the lamb" will be offered up to G-d on the cross.

 


Zechariah 12:10

...and they shall look to Me, Whom they have thrust through, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and be embittered over him as one is embittered over a firstborn.

This verse is describing the final war between Israel and the attacking nations:

Zechariah 12:9

And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

It becomes clearer when its many pronouns are identified:

And they [the Jews] shall look to Me [G-d], Whom they [the nations] have thrust through, and they [the Jews] shall mourn for him [their martyred].

Israel enjoys a special Providence and closeness to G-d:

Deuteronomy 4:7

For what great nation has G-d so near to it as the L-rd, our G-d, is to us whenever we call upon Him?

Therefore, what befalls Israel is said to have happened to G-d. In this instance, G-d is said to have been "thrust through" when Israel was in fact the victim. Similarly:

Isaiah 63:9

In all their affliction, He was afflicted....

Psalms 83:5--6

They have said: "Come, let us wipe them out from being a nation, in order that the name of Israel may no longer be remembered." For they have consulted together as one; against You they make a covenant.

Exodus 15:7

In the greatness of Your majesty You have overthrown those who have risen up against You....

Although the Egyptians persecuted Israel, not G-d, "Whoever rises up against Israel is considered as if he rose up against G-d."

According to the New Testament, the verse under discussion is prophesying the crucifixion of Jesus:

John 19:34, 36--37

But one of the soldiers pierced his side, with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water....For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled...."They shall look upon him whom they have pierced."

This "pious fraud" is blatant: The verse under discussion says "to Me" (eilai in Hebrew), not "upon him" (ahlav). The meaning of these words can readily be determined in:

Genesis 44:21

Then you said to your servant: "Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him."

 


 

Psalms 34:18--23

When they [the righteous] cried for help, the L-rd heard and delivered them from all their troubles. The L-rd is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the L-rd delivers him from them all. He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The L-rd redeems the life of His servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

This Psalm begins: "A Psalm of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away." After he was saved from Abimelech, David praised G-d for protecting the righteous.

The New Testament cites the verse under discussion as a prophecy that none of Jesus' bones would be broken on the cross:

John 19:36

For these things took place that the Scripture should be fulfilled: "Not a bone of him shall be broken."

 


 

Zechariah 13:6

And one shall say to him: "What are these wounds between your hands?" Then he shall answer: "Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends."

 

This verse refers to the false prophets who will arise prior to the Messianic Era. The preceding verses make this clear:

Zechariah 13:2--3

"And on that day," says the L-rd of hosts, "I will cut off the names of the idols from the land and they shall be remembered no more; and I will also remove from the land the prophets and the unclean spirit. And if any one [of them] again prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him: `You shall not live, for you speak lies in the Name of the L-rd;' and his father and mother who bore him shall pierce him through when he prophesies."

Missionaries claim that the verse under discussion alludes to Jesus' crucifixion wounds.

 


Zechariah 13:7

"Awake, O sword, against My shepherd and upon the man who is near Me," says the L-rd of hosts; "strike the shepherd, in order that the sheep may be scattered; I will turn My hand upon the little ones."

The focus of Zechariah chapter 13 is imposters: first false prophets and now the incompetent and insincere rulers who are to "shepherd" the exiled Jewish people, a nation likened to sheep:

Jeremiah 50:6

My people has been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray....

G-d promises to scrutinize these "shepherds"-bringing them "near Him"-and to punish them for oppressing His flock. He will then "turn [His] hand upon the little ones [the Jews]" in a gesture of salvation, as in:

Isaiah 1:25--26

I will turn My hand upon you and smelt away your dross as if with lye and remove all your alloy. And I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning....

 

The New Testament sees Jesus as the shepherd here:

Matthew 26:31

Then Jesus said to them: "You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written: `I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' "
